Welcome to the Computer Science transition work page.
On the transition day we will have an introduction to the course to answer any questions you may have. We will also look at the programming language and software you will need to be familiar with to begin your two summer tasks and get ready for September.
Course introduction
Summer Task 1: At home install and familiarise yourself with Visual Studio
NB: If anything goes wrong with your install you can use an online editor: Replit: C# Online Compiler & Interpreter but you will be using visual studio in school so it will help to become familiar with using the software.
Summer Task 2: Transition day and Summer tasks - programming
Complete the three booklets below and bring your finished programs with you for the first lesson in September.
As a reminder
- Where the PowerPoint says try that's for you to read, guess what it will do, then type into Visual studio to run and see if you were correct.
- In investigate read, type and make the changes that are written in the notes section on the bottom of the PowerPoint page.
- In the make section chose some programs to solve that will earn you about 6 points (1 point is easy, 3 points harder). You can do more for practice if you want.
- for evaluate you usually pick 2 of your solutions and complete the testing table (if your not sure how to do this we can discuss this in class) and complete the self evaluation.
Save your programs from the above tasks separately (eg Objective1 Task 1) as they will help you with the start of the course in your first topic and bring them with you to your first lesson with Mr Cox.
Summer Task 3: Make a programming cheat sheet
As you work through the tasks above please develop a programming cheat sheet for yourself that covers your new skills so far. Email this by 1st September to i.cox@chellaston.derby.sch.uk.
If you need some help designing/organising this have a look at the knowledge organiser links as below.
First Topics in September: Knowledge organisers
The knowledge organisers for the first two topics you will study are Data Representation, can be found here and Fundamentals of Programming, can be found here.
Also useful is the course book:
Please use the course book (available through amazon) as further reading for the following topics. This is essential in being successful with this course.
Any issues please do email me at i.cox@chellaston.derby.sch.uk
