Welcome to the Mathematics summer work page. The homework task set requires you to complete a range of exercises from the AS Pure Mathematics text book.

Compulsory Task One - Purchase the Textbooks (and Calculator)

The summer task needs you to complete a number of basic exercises from the AS Mathematics book.

To complete this task you will need to buy the Pure Mathematics textbook. Other resources needed for the course are the Applied Mathematics textbook and an Advanced Scientific Calculator.

For more details on the resources, follow the link below:

Mathematics materials to buy in preparation for the course.

Compulsory Task Two - Complete the Exercises Detailed

The work to complete from the AS Pure Mathematics book is detailed in following the link:

Mathematics transition homework.

Complete all of the exercise referenced in the document to the best of your ability. Please print off this page and include it at the front of your folder, followed by the work ready to show your teacher in September. Self-assess the work in red pen so you know how you have performed; the answers are in the back of the book. An assessment or homework task on the material covered in the set tasks will take place in September to check your understanding of these areas.

Here is a copy of the knowledge organisers for the chapters you need to complete some work from. A copy of these were given out of the transition day. Only complete the questions requested at this stage - if you want more practice on these areas look down into the optional task.

Knowledge organisers.

On your return in September, you will be expected to have the two books and an A4 folder with dividers as well as A4 paper for notes and work. We will guide you on how we would like folders organised and work filed in September.

The AS/A level course in Mathematics is a demanding one and you must make sure you are on top of your basic algebra. There are a few published resources covering the transition which can be purchased but there is also enough material on this page to help you prepare beyond what you do in the homework task. All of the following is optional but may provide further support in areas of weakness.

Optional Tasks - Edexcel Work

You must ensure that remaining content from your GCSE course is complete! In working on the compulsory task or from your experience of some of the more difficult algebraic topics from GCSE you may decide you want extra practice or support.

These resources from Edexcel (the board we follow) are well worth a look! They contain notes and plenty of examples on key areas you will encounter at AS/A-level and then have set exercises to check your understanding and have the answers at the end.

Expanding brackets and simplifying expressions.

Surds.

Rules of indices.

Factorising expressions.

Completing the square.

Solving quadratic equations.

Sketching quadratic graphs.

Solving linear simultaneous equations.

Solving linear and quadratic simultaneous equations.

Solving simultaneous equations graphically.

Linear inequalities.

Quadratic inequalities.

Sketching cubic and reciprocal graphs.

Translating graphs.

Straight line graphs.

Parallel and perpendicular lines.

Pythagoras' theorem.

Proportion.

Circle theorems.

Trigonometry.

Rearranging equations.

Volume and surface area of 3D shapes.

Area under a graph.

Optional Task - Review Work on Websites

To help complete the compulsory task and as recommended some of the optional tasks, you can use a number of websites to support your learning. Again you should focus on higher end algebraic topics (see list above for details).

Optional Task - Other Resources Regarding KS4-KS5 Transition

Transition material from the bridging course the Mathematics department used to run.

LRY Bridging Materials

Although we do not follow the OCR specification, their transition material is also an excellent document and is well worth a look.

OCR Bridging the Gap Document

Finally, although the majority of transition material provided here is not specifically set, bookmark or reference this firefly page as the materials may be of use to you as further support work in the first term of the AS course.
